Monreale

Monreale is a historic hill town near Palermo, set on the slopes of Monte Caputo at about 310 metres above sea level. From its elevated position it looks over the Oreto River valley, the fertile Conca d’Oro, Palermo and the gulf, giving the town a panoramic character closely tied to its landscape.

Its identity is rooted above all in the Norman period. In the 12th century, the city was founded by King William II, known as “the Good”, and developed into an important religious and cultural centre. The site’s strategic value had already been recognised earlier, with an Arab stronghold associated with the area before the Norman phase reshaped its history and appearance.

Today Monreale is defined by this layered Arab-Norman and Byzantine-influenced heritage, together with a strong artistic memory linked to mosaic and ceramic craftsmanship. Its distinction lies in the way a commanding hilltop setting, Norman royal ambition and enduring religious culture come together in one of Sicily’s most recognisable historic towns.
