Roccamena is a small inland borgo in the Province of Palermo, set among hilly countryside near the Belice river and linked to the slopes around Monte Maranfusa. Developed on a hill with an original grid plan, it has the compact scale and rural character of a village whose identity remains tied to agriculture, local craftsmanship and long-standing community traditions.
The town itself is relatively recent by Sicilian standards. It was founded around 1796 as a late-feudal settlement after Giuseppe Beccadelli di Bologna e Gravina obtained the *licentia populandi*, while the surrounding territory preserves a much older memory of settlement, with evidence reaching back to the 9th and 8th centuries BC. Tradition connects the name Roccamena to the expression “Che rocca amena!”, an admiring reference to its pleasant rocky position.
This contrast between an 18th-century village layout and a landscape inhabited since antiquity gives Roccamena its particular identity: a quiet hill village whose story begins late as a municipality, but stands within one of the Belice area’s deeply layered historical territories.
