Torretta

Torretta is a small comune in the province of Palermo, set at the foot of Mount Canalicchi in the coastal hills not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea and the city of Palermo. At about 306 metres above sea level, it has the compact scale of an inland Sicilian village while remaining closely tied to the landscape between mountains, countryside and coast.

Its name is thought to come from a small tower around which the village developed, and the first inhabited centre dates to 1599, when it was founded by the nobleman Arrigo Traina. Torretta later followed the pattern of a Sicilian feudal village, passing through the hands of important aristocratic families and keeping a strong local memory of the Risorgimento period.

Around the village, traces of much earlier human presence connect the area with prehistoric, Greek and Roman phases, adding depth to its more recent baronial identity. Torretta’s distinctiveness lies in this layered character: a hillside village with a precise 16th-century origin, an aristocratic past, and a landscape that still hints at Sicily’s older worlds.
