Marineo

Marineo is a small town in the Palermo area, set between the coast and Sicily’s interior at the foot of the imposing rock known as La Rocca. Rising above the settlement and the rural landscapes of the Eleuterio valley, this cliff gives the town one of its clearest visual identities, with traditional names such as the “Dente canino della Sicilia” and the “Tomba di Polifemo” attached to its profile.

The surrounding territory was inhabited from antiquity, with traces dating back to the 8th century BC and a historical memory linked to the ancient city of Makella. The present town, however, took shape in 1550, when Francesco Beccadelli obtained the licentia populandi from Charles V and the first hundred houses were built below La Rocca.

Marineo’s character is rooted in this meeting of landscape, feudal foundation and older settlement history. Its identity remains strongly local and devotional, especially through the figure of San Ciro, while its position along the Eleuterio valley keeps alive the sense of a town poised between mountain, riverland and the route from Palermo towards inland Sicily.
