San Giuseppe Jato is a small inland hill town in the Province of Palermo, set 463 metres above sea level at the foot of Monte Jato. Its character is both agricultural and historical, with a rural Sicilian setting and a close connection to the ancient settlement known in the sources as Jatas or Ietas, whose origins are described through several overlapping Punic, Greek-related and local traditions.
The present town has a more recent identity. It was founded as a feudal village in 1779 by Prince Giuseppe Beccadelli Bologna of Camporeale, originally known simply as San Giuseppe, and took the name San Giuseppe Jato in 1864. A major landslide in 1838 led to its complete rebuilding on the same site, giving the town a distinctive modern history layered over a much older landscape.
Today, San Giuseppe Jato is defined by this contrast between mountain, countryside and memory: an inland Palermo-area town where ancient Jato, feudal origins and 19th-century reconstruction all remain central to its sense of place.
