Camporeale

Camporeale is a small agricultural town in western Sicily, set between the provinces of Trapani and Palermo in the Alto Belice area, on the eastern side of the Val di Mazara. Its landscape is one of hills, mountains and green plains, with vineyards giving the surrounding countryside much of its identity.

The present-day town is relatively young by Sicilian standards: it was founded in 1779 on the former Feudo di Macellaro, after a royal concession to Giuseppe Beccadelli Bologna, Prince of Camporeale and Sambuca. Around this planned origin lies a much older territory, with traces of prehistoric, ancient and Arab presence in the wider area, giving Camporeale a layered background without making it feel like an ancient city.

Its character remains closely tied to agriculture, local craftsmanship and community memory. The 1968 Belice Valley earthquake left a visible mark on the settlement, with later development extending downhill from the older core. Camporeale stands out as a rural Sicilian town whose identity is defined by its 18th-century foundation, its Macellaro origins and its strong connection to vineyards and wood craftsmanship.
