Partinico

Partinico is an inland town in the province of Palermo, set within countryside long associated with springs, streams, wells and fertile agricultural land. Its character is that of a historic small municipality: a compact old centre, narrow streets, strong religious customs and a rural identity that still shapes how the town is remembered.

Its roots reach back to prehistoric settlement, with a Roman presence later recorded in the area. The ancient name **Parthenicum** is traditionally linked to the Latin expression *pars iniqua*, and the place was cited in the early 3rd century under Emperor Caracalla. Byzantine, Arab and Norman phases followed, giving Partinico a broad historical identity rather than a single defining era.

A key turning point came in April 1800, when Partinico was recognised as an autonomous municipality and, days later, received the title of city, ending its dependence on Palermo after a long period of subjection. Today, what makes Partinico distinctive is this combination of ancient memory, water-rich rural landscape and civic history within a town that remains closely tied to its agricultural and popular traditions.
