Montelepre

Montelepre is a small town in the Palermo area, set on a plain where a valley gathers the slopes of several mountains, with Monte d’Oro as its most recognisable natural landmark. From higher ground, the landscape opens toward the Gulf of Castellammare, giving the town a setting that feels closely tied to both inland Sicily and the northern coast.

Its identity reaches back to a medieval and feudal past, with earlier names recorded as Munchilebbi or Monchilebi. The territory is also linked, in tradition, to the ancient Sican city of Hykkara, said to have stood on the slopes of Monte d’Oro, though the town’s better-documented history belongs to the medieval and later periods.

Montelepre later became a municipality in 1812 and carries a strong local memory shaped by religious devotion, community traditions and episodes of political unrest. Its distinctiveness lies in this mix of mountain-valley landscape, layered Sicilian identity and a history that connects feudal origins with revolutionary and controversial figures from the modern age.
