Borgetto

Borgetto is a small medieval borgo in the Palermo area, set at the foot of Monte Crocefia at around 280 metres above sea level. From its central position it looks towards the Gulf of Castellammare, giving the village a hillside character shaped by open views, traditional streets and a strong local sense of community.

Its identity reaches back to the late 13th century: the locality is first documented in 1294, and early sources connect it with Simone d’Escolo. The old name, *Casale di lu Burgettu*, and a place name that may derive from Greek or Arabic words meaning tower or castle, point to origins around a fortified nucleus. Later, Benedictine influence helped guide the growth of the present settlement.

Today Borgetto remains closely associated with religious devotion, village traditions and agricultural life, but its distinctiveness lies above all in the way its medieval, fortified beginnings and monastic history are still woven into the character of a small Sicilian community overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare.
