Castronovo di Sicilia is an inland hill village in the Province of Palermo, set in the Sicani Mountains on a slope near the Platani River, around 680 metres above sea level. Its setting in the upper Platani valley gives it a distinctly rural mountain character, with a compact old centre of narrow lanes, arches and courtyards that still reflects Arab-Norman patterns of settlement.
The village has roots far older than its medieval appearance suggests. The surrounding territory was inhabited from protohistoric times and is linked to early Sicani settlement along the Platani, before later Hellenized, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Norman phases. Its earlier names, Kars-nubu and then Castrum Novum, preserve that layered identity: the first connected with the Arab period, the second with the Norman age.
Castronovo is also strongly marked by the memory of San Vitale, born in ancient Kars-nubu in the early 10th century to a noble family of Byzantine origin. This blend of mountain landscape, long settlement continuity and Byzantine-Arab-Norman heritage gives the village a more distinctive profile than a simple rural borgo.
