Bivona

Bivona is a historic hill town in the heart of the Monti Sicani, set in the upper valley of the Magazzolo River amid breezy uplands, abundant water and wide peach gardens. Its territory stretches from low southern slopes to the heights of Monte delle Rose, giving the town a distinctly rural mountain character.

Although its origins are older, the present settlement took shape at the beginning of the 14th century around a fortified nucleus. Bivona had a long Muslim presence, still remembered in elements of local dialect, phonetics and place names, before becoming a feudal centre and later one of Sicily’s most important lordships in the 15th and 16th centuries.

In 1554 Charles V raised Bivona to a duchy and granted it the title of city, a status that still helps explain its strong historical identity. Today, its character is defined by Catholic devotion, Arab cultural traces, old rural crafts and peach-growing countryside — a distinctive blend of mountain village, former ducal centre and deeply rooted Sicilian memory.
