Alia

Alia is a small inland village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, set on the south-western side of the Madonie near the Torto river. Surrounded by hills, woods and open countryside, it has a rural character closely tied to agriculture, livestock culture and the rhythms of traditional Sicilian village life.

Its identity is rooted in the former feudo of Lalia, from which the town’s name is linked. While the surrounding territory shows signs of older settlement, the modern village took shape in 1617, when Donna Francesca Cifuentes Imbarbara, baroness of Lalia, obtained permission to populate the estate. The first houses developed around a religious and baronial nucleus, giving Alia the compact historic form it still preserves.

Known as the “Città Giardino”, or Garden Town, Alia is distinctive for the way its greenery, inland panoramas and feudal memory combine in a quiet Madonie landscape, making it more than just a rural village: it is a place where countryside, small-town tradition and 17th-century origins remain visibly connected.
