Sclafani Bagni is a small medieval village in the Palermo area, set in the heart of the Madonie Park. Built on rocky ground and surrounded by hills, mountains, caves and woodland, it has the character of an inland borgo closely tied to its natural setting and to the thermal waters that help define its identity.
Its history reaches back into uncertain ancient layers: some scholars have associated the site with Ambica, while later phases link the area to rural settlements from the Norman period onward. The village took on greater importance in the first half of the 14th century, when the county of Sclafani was established under Matteo Sclafani and the settlement developed as a fortified place near routes leading into Sicily’s interior.
Today, Sclafani Bagni remains a quiet, tradition-minded village with a rural character and a strong religious memory. Its distinctiveness lies in the combination of Madonie mountain landscape, medieval fortified origins and an enduring thermal identity.
