Santo Stefano Quisquina is a small mountain village in Sicily’s Monti Sicani area, set at about 732 metres on the slopes beneath Serra Quisquina. Its territory lies in the Magazzolo valley, between the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento, where woods, pastures, springs and mountain valleys give the village a distinctly rural character.
Its name and setting are closely connected: Arab sources called the place “Coschin,” said to mean “darkness,” a reference to the density of the surrounding forests. The village has medieval and feudal roots, with a documented feudal lord in 1296 and later development under the Ventimiglia barony, which helped shape its historic identity.
Santo Stefano Quisquina is also marked by a deep religious memory tied to Santa Rosalia, strengthened by a seventeenth-century discovery that linked her story to this mountain landscape. Today its identity rests on that combination of Sicani highland scenery, water-rich countryside, pastoral traditions and a distinctive devotion that gives the village a character unlike the coastal Sicily many travellers know.
