Caccamo

Caccamo is a medieval hill town in the province of Palermo, set about 520 metres above sea level on a rocky spur at the foot of Mount San Calogero. From its elevated position it looks over the San Leonardo river valley, now marked by Lake Rosamarina, with hills, citrus groves and olive groves around it and the Gulf of Termini Imerese only a short distance away.

Its identity is rooted above all in the Norman and feudal history of Sicily. In 1094 Caccamo was granted as a fief to the Norman lord Goffredo de Sagejo, and later passed to the Bonello family, becoming associated with the power struggles and baronial tensions of the 12th century. Earlier origins are less clearly defined, but the town’s documented character comes into focus through this medieval phase.

Today Caccamo is known for its compact historic fabric, narrow paved streets, ancient walls and the layered presence of medieval and Baroque styles. Its distinctive appeal lies in the way a dramatic hilltop setting and a strong feudal memory still shape the character of the town.
