Valledolmo

Valledolmo is a small agricultural town in the province of Palermo, set on the slopes of Pizzo Sampieri at the foot of the south-western Madonie. Surrounded by countryside of wheat fields, vineyards and olive groves, it has the compact character of a rural borgo, with an identity closely tied to farming, local craftsmanship and traditional village life.

Its history is strongly marked by the 17th century. An early urban nucleus was formed in 1600, and in 1650 Count Giuseppe Mario Cutelli obtained the *licentia populandi*, after which the settlement expanded with a regular grid plan. Baron Antonio Cicala is also associated with its early development, linking Valledolmo to the feudal foundations and noble families that shaped many inland Sicilian towns.

The name itself preserves part of this memory: Valledolmo derives from *Valle dell’Ulmo*, the “valley of the elm”, while an older name, *Castrum Northmanni*, recalls a Norman layer in its past. This combination of planned 17th-century origins, agricultural landscape and name rooted in local memory gives Valledolmo a distinct place among the inland villages of the Palermo area.
