Sant’Angelo Muxaro

Sant’Angelo Muxaro is a small hill village in the Agrigento area, set above the Platani valley along the left bank of the river. Its landscape is part rural high ground and part rugged inland Sicily, with valleys, gypsum hills, caves, canyons and orange gardens around the settlement.

The village has an unusually deep historical identity. Many scholars identify this area with ancient Kamikos, the legendary city linked to King Kokalos, Daedalus and Minos, while archaeological evidence connects the territory with the Sican world and contacts with the Mycenaean sphere. The present inhabited centre developed in the 16th century over the remains of Mu-Assar, a fortified settlement of Muslim origin.

Today Sant’Angelo Muxaro is defined less by size than by memory: a rural borgo where ancient myth, prehistoric settlement and later village life overlap on the same hill. Its distinctive character lies in this combination of inland landscape, Sican heritage and a modern community whose identity was probably also influenced by Albanian or Greco-Albanian colonists.
