San Biagio Platani is a small Sicilian hill village set on a gentle slope above the valleys of the Platani and Turvoli rivers. Surrounded by cultivated green hills, it has the compact character of an inland borgo, with a village life closely tied to religious tradition, communal memory and the surrounding agricultural landscape.
The present settlement was founded in 1635 with a planned orthogonal layout, giving the historic centre a more ordered structure than many older hill towns. It was originally known simply as San Biagio; “Platani” was added in 1863 to distinguish it from other Italian towns with the same name, linking its identity clearly to the nearby river valley.
What makes San Biagio Platani distinctive is the way its history is still expressed through collective creativity. Since the 18th century, its Easter-period customs have brought together devotion, handmade decoration and the long rivalry of local confraternities, leaving the village with a cultural identity that is unusually vivid for a place of its size.
