Cattolica Eraclea

Cattolica Eraclea is a historic village in the Agrigento area of Sicily, set on a sloping plateau at the foot of Monte Sorcio and looking out over the Platani valley. Its position gives it a character tied to both inland countryside and the nearby coast, with a compact, planned centre that reflects its early modern origins.

The town was founded under Spanish rule in the early 17th century, originally with the name Cattolica, after the granting of a *licentia populandi* and the initiative of Blasco Isfar et Corilles. Its present name dates from 1874, when “Eraclea” was added by royal decree to distinguish it from other places and to recall the ancient Greek colony connected with the surrounding area.

Today, Cattolica Eraclea retains the identity of a small Sicilian town shaped by religious traditions, local festival culture and noble feudal history. What makes it distinctive is this combination of a planned 1600s foundation and a name that deliberately links the village to a much older Greek memory.
