Casteltermini is a small hill town in the Province of Agrigento, set in the Monti Sicani at 564 metres above sea level. Dominated by Pizzo Santa Croce, it sits amid countryside, mountain scenery and former sulphur-mining landscapes, giving the town a character shaped as much by its rural setting as by its industrial past.
Although the surrounding territory was inhabited in very early times, the town’s present identity is rooted in the Arab hamlet of Chiudia and in its formal foundation in 1629, when Gian Vincenzo Maria Termini Ferreri received the licence to populate it. Its 17th-century development gave Casteltermini a planned urban form, while later sulphur mining made it an important industrial centre in inland Sicily.
Today, Casteltermini retains the feel of a traditional Sicilian small town, closely connected to religious memory, local folklore and craft traditions. What makes it distinctive is this unusual combination: an Arab-origin settlement reshaped as a 17th-century foundation, set below Pizzo Santa Croce and marked by the legacy of Sicily’s sulphur age.
