Naro is a small hill town in the inland Agrigento area, rising at around 600 metres above sea level over fertile valleys, open countryside and nearby artificial basins. Its setting in the Agrigento hinterland gives it a rural, elevated character, while its compact old centre is defined by steep lanes, stairways, warm-coloured stone and a strong medieval and baroque imprint.
The town has very ancient origins, with a territory linked to prehistoric settlement and the Sicani, and is associated with the historical name Camico. Over time it passed through several major Sicilian phases, including Greek, Arab and Norman influences, before becoming an important stronghold of the Chiaramonte family in the 14th century. Frederick II of Swabia called it “Fulgentissima”, a name that still suggests the prestige attached to Naro’s past.
Its later flourishing in the 17th century gave the town much of its baroque identity, layered over an older medieval structure. What makes Naro distinctive is this close meeting of hill-country landscape, feudal memory and ornate urban detail, often described as one of the notable baroque centres of the Agrigento area.
