Campobello di Licata is a small hill town in the province of Agrigento, set on a plateau in the Salso river valley. Around it, green hills, vineyards, orchards and wheat fields give the town a clearly rural character, rooted in the fertility that is reflected in its name: “Campobello” was associated with the quality of its soil.
The town’s modern history begins in 1681, when Raimondo Ramondetta, Baron of Campobello and Duke of Montalbo, obtained the authorization to found the settlement. It developed inland as people moved away from the coast in search of safer ground during the period of pirate raids, and later became an autonomous municipality in 1812 with the abolition of feudal rights.
Today Campobello di Licata combines its agricultural identity with a distinctive artistic layer linked to Silvio Benedetto, whose public works helped shape its reputation as a small “City of Art”. That blend of fertile countryside, feudal origins and contemporary civic art gives the town a character of its own within inland Agrigento.
