Ravanusa

Ravanusa is an inland town in the Agrigento area, set on a hill at the foot of Monte Saraceno and surrounded by cultivated countryside. Its character is rural and historic, with an identity closely tied to the long human presence in this part of Sicily’s interior.

The territory reaches back to the protostoric period, while the area is also associated by some sources with ancient Kakiron and with an important Greek phase in the Agrigento hinterland. The present settlement is linked to Norman origins, followed by later modern development; in 1616, Giacomo Bonanno founded the current town, giving shape to the Ravanusa known today.

This layered background gives Ravanusa a distinctive place among Sicily’s inland borghi: not simply a hill town, but a community where agricultural life, ancient settlement and the memory of Greek and Norman Sicily remain closely connected.
