Enna

Enna is a historic inland city in the Monti Erei, at the centre of Sicily and 931 metres above sea level. Its height makes it the highest provincial capital in Italy, with a setting that opens onto hills, plains, vineyards and olive groves. This elevated position has long defined its identity, earning it the names “Belvedere di Sicilia” and “ombelico della Sicilia”.

The city’s roots reach back to prehistoric times, with early settlement by the Sicani, who are linked here to the cult of Ceres. Enna later passed through Greek and Roman phases, followed by Arab-Norman and medieval periods that reinforced its role as a strategic point in the middle of the island. In 1324, Federico II d’Aragona assembled the Sicilian Parliament here, a sign of its political importance.

Today Enna has a calm, inland character, distinct from Sicily’s busier coastal cities. Its narrow streets and preserved historic fabric reflect a long continuity of settlement, while its central position and commanding altitude make it one of the clearest expressions of Sicily’s interior landscape and memory.
