Santa Caterina Villarmosa is an inland hill town in the Province of Caltanissetta, set north of the provincial capital at 606 metres above sea level. Built on a hilly landscape west of the Salso river, it belongs to the rural heart of Sicily rather than the island’s coast, with an old centre, agricultural surroundings and a traditional community character.
The present settlement was founded in 1572 during the feudal period, under a *licentia populandi* granted to the Grimaldi barons of Enna, and its current town centre developed between 1572 and 1604. The wider territory, however, was inhabited much earlier, with traces from prehistoric times through the late imperial age and evidence of Punic presence. Its historical names include Risigallo or Risicalla, Grimaldo, Santa Caterina and finally Santa Caterina Villarmosa.
What gives the town its particular identity is the combination of feudal origins, older archaeological memory and a strongly inland landscape marked by gypsum rocks, karst forms and nearby sulphur and rock-salt deposits. Together with its agricultural life and traditions such as embroidery and crochet, Santa Caterina Villarmosa offers a distinctly central Sicilian character.
