Leonforte is a historic town in Sicily’s Erei Mountains, set among water-rich countryside, rural buildings, mills and cultivated land. Its character is closely tied to this upland landscape: a small borgo where agriculture, local traditions and the presence of water have long shaped both daily life and the town’s identity.
The modern town was founded in 1610 by Nicolò Placido Branciforti and raised as a principality, but its roots reach further back to the ancient Sicel settlement known as Tabas or Tavaca. Later Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Spanish phases all left their mark on the territory before the Branciforti period gave Leonforte its present historical profile.
Today, Leonforte stands out less for a single story than for the continuity between its ancient origins, feudal foundation and rural mountain setting. Its distinctive identity comes from being a Branciforti town built on much older ground, in a part of inland Sicily where water and agriculture remain central to the sense of place.
