Assoro

Assoro is a small inland hill village in the Province of Enna, set on Mount La Stella at about 850 metres above sea level. Its position in central Sicily gives it a compact, elevated character, with a historic centre of medieval streets and an urban layout remembered for its Islamic-type imprint.

Its identity reaches back to the Siculi, with later Greek-Roman, Arab, Norman and feudal phases shaping the town’s memory. In 1061 Assoro was linked to the Norman arrival of Count Roger, and it later passed through several noble lordships, reflecting the layered political history of inland Sicily.

What makes Assoro distinctive is not only its antiquity, but the strength of civic memory attached to it: the motto “Viri Fortes et Fideles” is associated with its people, recalling a reputation for courage and loyalty that still helps define the village today.
