Pietraperzia

Pietraperzia is an ancient hill town in the Province of Enna, set in the Salso River valley at the heart of Sicily. Rising on the slopes of a rocky spur 476 metres above sea level, it takes much of its identity from the pierced rock formation beneath it, a detail echoed in the town’s name and in the landscape that frames its stone-paved lanes, stairways and small squares.

Its history reaches far beyond the medieval village. The surrounding territory preserves evidence of very early settlement, while local memory and sources connect the area with the Sicani, later Greek and Roman traces, and the old name Caulonia, though the exact foundation story is not certain. In the 11th century, during the Norman conquest under Count Roger, an earlier Islamic fortification was rebuilt and enlarged, and the town later prospered under the Barresi or Barresio family.

Today Pietraperzia’s character lies in this close overlap of geology, inland Sicilian history and traditional townscape: a borgo whose very name recalls the rock it stands on.
