Gangi is a medieval hill town in the eastern part of the province of Palermo, set high on Monte Marone in the Madonie, within the Madonie Park. At about 1,010 metres above sea level, it has the compact profile of a mountain village: narrow lanes, low stone houses and a historic centre shaped by its hilltop position.
Its identity reaches back beyond the Middle Ages. The town is linked in tradition to the ancient settlement of Engyum, later known as Minoa, and its present name is said to derive from Engyum. Some sources trace these origins to Cretan settlers around 1200 BC, though the earliest history belongs partly to legend.
The Gangi seen today is strongly marked by its medieval phase. After the old settlement was destroyed in 1299 during the War of the Sicilian Vespers, the town was rebuilt on nearby Mount Marone and later developed under the Ventimiglia family, connected with the county of Geraci. This mix of mountain setting, medieval fabric and enduring religious and rural traditions gives Gangi a distinctive place in the Madonie.
