San Giovanni Gemini is a small inland hill town in the province of Agrigento, set on a gentle slope at the foot of Monte Cammarata. Its streets and rooftops sit so close to neighbouring Cammarata that the two places often feel visually interwoven, with San Giovanni Gemini developing within the older town’s territory rather than as an entirely separate world. The setting links it naturally with Monte Cammarata and the Monti Sicani area, giving the borgo a distinctly upland, interior Sicilian character.
Its identity is inseparable from Cammarata. The settlement was once known as San Giovanni di Cammarata, and the present name, San Giovanni Gemini, was adopted in 1879. Its origins are explained through local traditions connected with the castle area of Count Federico II Abatellis: one account tells of inhabitants moving after a landslide, while another says the town was founded by people expelled from Cammarata. Whatever the precise origin, San Giovanni Gemini remains distinctive for this close, almost enclave-like relationship with its neighbour, its compact old urban fabric, and a public life still strongly marked by popular devotion.
