Villalba

Villalba is a small agricultural village in inland Sicily, in the Nisseno area of Caltanissetta province, close to the meeting point with the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento. Set among wheat fields, limestone reliefs and the rocky uplands known as the Serre di Villalba, it has the character of a rural borgo whose identity is closely tied to land, community and religious tradition.

The village took shape in the 18th century on the former feudal estate of Micciché, below the hill where an Arab-era farmstead once stood. In 1751 Nicolò Palmeri Calatafo acquired the estate and, after receiving permission to populate it, brought settlers from nearby villages to cultivate the land; the first houses were built in 1763. The name Villalba was given in honour of the Spanish ancestors Sanchez de Villalba.

With its rectilinear street layout and strong agricultural memory, Villalba feels less like a town arranged around spectacle than a settlement born from estate, fields and faith. Its distinctiveness lies in this clear 18th-century origin, still readable in the village’s rural setting and community-based character.
