Mazzarino

Mazzarino is an inland hill town in the province of Caltanissetta, rising 553 metres above sea level east of the Salso River. Its historic centre is known as one of the area’s strongest expressions of Sicilian Baroque, with an old borgo whose streets and open spaces preserve the shape of an 18th-century urban plan.

The town’s identity reaches much further back than its Baroque appearance. Its territory is linked to early Sicani occupation, while ancient sources connect it with the Greek name Maktorium; later, the medieval settlement developed around a fortified hilltop nucleus. Mazzarino also became an important feudal centre, and under the Carafa Branciforti, princes of Butera, it was remembered as a small political and cultural capital.

Today, Mazzarino’s character lies in this layering of ancient memory, medieval origins and 17th- to 18th-century refinement. Its long urban axis, widening into squares and broader spaces, gives the town a distinctive rhythm that sets it apart among the historic centres of inland Sicily.
