Lucca Sicula is a small inland hill town in the province of Agrigento, set at 513 metres above sea level amid the countryside of western Sicily. Its character is rural and locally rooted, with an agricultural identity and a compact historic core that still reflects its 17th-century origins.
The settlement stands in an area once known as Culla, in the Vallo di Mazzara, and was founded in 1622 with a *licentia populandi*, in connection with Francesco Lucchese or Lucchese Palli. It later passed into the hands of Geronimo Filangeri in 1670 and remained part of the feudal world until the abolition of feudalism. The addition of “Sicula” to its name in 1863 gave the town the form it carries today.
What makes Lucca Sicula distinctive is the clarity of its planned Seicento identity: a small agricultural village whose historic layout, described as a grid with octagonal axes, still gives visible shape to its feudal foundation.
