Corleone is a historic inland town in Sicily, set at 542 metres above sea level in a mountain basin enclosed by rocky heights and limestone cliffs. Its landscape gives it a compact, sheltered character, with the feeling of a settlement closely tied to the rugged interior rather than the coast.
The town’s identity reaches far back: its origins are traced to the first phase of the Neolithic, in the sixth millennium BC. Later Arab and Saracen phases also form part of its historical background, leaving Corleone with a layered inland heritage connected to old cults, folklore and the everyday traditions of rural Sicily.
Corleone is also marked by a complex modern reputation, known internationally through mafia associations and the use of its name in *The Godfather*. Beyond that fame, its distinctiveness lies in the contrast between a very ancient mountain settlement, a dramatic limestone setting and a cultural memory that is both local and globally recognised.
