Chiusa Sclafani is a small medieval village in the Sosio River valley, set on a slope in the inland area between Palermo, Corleone, Sciacca and Ribera. Its setting gives it a rural, enclosed character, with the surrounding countryside and nearby Mount Omo Morto forming part of its identity.
The present settlement developed from 1320, when Count Matteo Sclafani promoted a new fortified nucleus on the remains of an earlier Saracen hamlet. Its position later placed it within the orbit of several feudal families, including the Sclafani, Peralta, Cordona, Gioeni and Colonna, giving the village a layered medieval and feudal background.
Today Chiusa Sclafani retains the feel of a compact old hill village, closely tied to local traditions and the agricultural landscape around it. Its distinctiveness lies in this combination of sloping valley setting, medieval origin and feudal memory, rather than in the scale of the place itself.
