Campofiorito is a small rural comune in the province of Palermo, set at about 660 metres above sea level on the slopes of the hill known as Calvario. Its setting is hilly and mountainous, with a compact historic centre and a village character closely tied to the surrounding countryside.
The town’s deeper origins are not entirely clear: different accounts connect the area with Greek, Roman and Arab phases, and the name “Ballanūba” is associated with an Arab rebuilding tradition. Its later identity is more firmly defined by feudal Sicily: in 1660 Stefano Reggio founded Campofiorito in the feudo of Batticani and was named its first prince, before the town later passed to the Branciforte family around the 19th century.
Today, Campofiorito remains strongly marked by agriculture, livestock raising, local religious memory linked to Santo Stefano, and artisan stone working. What distinguishes it is this combination of highland landscape, rural continuity and a clearly dated feudal foundation within a much older, partly uncertain historical background.
