Zafferana Etnea is a hill town on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, within the Etna Park, set on a natural terrace between the volcano and the Sicilian coast. Its setting defines much of its character: dark lava, green vegetation and yellow broom frame wide views that can reach the Calabrian coast and the Gulf of Syracuse.
The town’s identity is closely tied to Etna’s inland routes and medieval settlement. In Roman times, its territory was crossed by an important road linking Tauromenium and Katane, an alternative to the coastal Via Valeria. The present historic centre is traced to 1387, when a Benedictine priory gave shape to a settled nucleus on this volcanic slope. The name appears as “Zafarana” in 1694, and its origin may be connected to the Arabic *zaufanah*, associated with the yellow colour of the landscape.
Often called the “Pearl of Etna,” Zafferana Etnea stands out as a panoramic Etna town where volcanic scenery, sea views and layered cultural memory meet on one high terrace.
