Nicolosi

Nicolosi sits in the Province of Catania on the southern flank of Mount Etna, about 700 metres above sea level, where the town meets lava landscapes and volcanic scenery. Traditionally known as the *Porta dell’Etna*, it has the character of a small Etna settlement and a long-established holiday destination, shaped by mild air, mountain surroundings and its role as a southern access point to the volcano.

The town’s origins go back to the 14th century, when its first inhabited nucleus grew around a Benedictine monastery established in 1359. Its position has always been both defining and precarious: eruptions in the 16th century, an earthquake in 1542 and the major eruption of 1669 forced destruction, movement and rebuilding further downhill.

This close relationship with Etna gives Nicolosi its distinctive identity. Its black lava-stone character, religious memory and stories such as the 1886 lava flow remembered in local tradition make it more than a base for the volcano: it is a town whose history has been repeatedly written by the mountain above it.
