Viagrande

Viagrande is a historic small town on the slopes of Etna, set in the hills between the volcano and the sea. Its setting gives it a distinctly Etna-area character: vineyards, fruit trees, villas and gardens sit alongside dark volcanic stone, while the old centre keeps an intimate village scale, with irregular streets and pink-toned houses edged by lavastone details.

The town’s identity is closely tied to its position on an old crossroads, where the route between Catania and Messina met a track leading down toward the coast. Its present urban nucleus grew from the fusion of the earlier hamlets of Villalori and Vilardi, and a local historical tradition places the formation of the current old centre in 1408, when fertile lands were turned into vineyards under feudal ownership.

Today Viagrande remains strongly linked to community traditions, agriculture and Sicilian cultural memory. Its mention in Giovanni Verga’s *Nedda* adds a literary note to a place whose distinctiveness lies in the meeting of road history, volcanic landscape and village life between Etna and the Ionian coast.
