Maletto is a small mountain borgo in the province of Catania, set high on the northern slopes of Mount Etna and often described as the highest village on the volcano. Its setting gives it a distinctly rural Etna character: volcanic countryside, terraced cultivation, wooded areas and broad views shape a quiet settlement away from heavier traffic.
The village’s present identity is closely tied to the Swabian period. In 1263, Manfredi Maletta, Count of Mineo, had a fortified tower built here, and the settlement took its name from him. From the late 14th century, Maletto was linked to the Spadafora family, who held the fief until 1812 and helped preserve its autonomy when nearby hamlets were grouped under Bronte in the 16th century.
Today, Maletto stands out for the way its medieval origin, high-altitude volcanic landscape and agricultural memory remain closely connected, giving this small Etna village a character that is both historical and unmistakably mountain Sicilian.
