Adrano

Adrano is a historic inland town in the Province of Catania, set on the southwestern side of Mount Etna. Its territory lies within Etna Park and stretches toward the volcano’s crater, while the town itself stands on a lava plateau above the Simeto river valley. This setting gives Adrano a strongly Etnean identity: volcanic ground, agricultural traditions and a landscape shaped by the meeting of mountain and valley.

The area has very ancient roots, and the urban centre of Adranon was founded around 400 B.C. by Dionysius I of Syracuse. Its name recalls the Siculian god Adranos, linking the town to one of eastern Sicily’s older cultural memories. Over time it passed through Roman, Arab, Norman and later feudal phases, becoming known as Adernò before the name Adrano was restored in 1929.

Today Adrano’s character is that of a layered Sicilian hill town, where religious tradition, artisan culture and the memory of successive civilisations remain closely tied to the Etna landscape. Its distinctiveness lies in this combination of ancient Adranon, volcanic setting and a long history carried through changing names and ruling powers.
