Pettineo

Pettineo is a medieval village in the Province of Messina, set in the Halaesa Valley at the foot of Monte Cuono, or San Cuono, in the western Nebrodi area. Its setting is rural and inland, with the Tusa and Santo Stefano rivers and a countryside of citrus groves, olive groves and orchards framing the settlement.

Known in medieval sources as Pectineum, Pettineo is documented from the 13th century, when it was a fief of Manfredi Maletta. The village later became a fortified centre and passed through important feudal hands, including the Ventimiglia family, giving it the character of a small strategic community rather than a simple farming village.

Today its identity rests on that combination of medieval structure, agricultural memory and local religious tradition. Narrow streets, stairways and courtyards still reflect the old settlement pattern, while the surrounding valley keeps Pettineo closely tied to the land that sustained it. What makes the village distinctive is this compact blend of feudal history and rural Nebrodi landscape, concentrated in a quiet inland borgo.
