Tusa

Tusa is a small medieval hill village in the western Nebrodi, in the province of Messina, set among centuries-old olive trees, chestnut woods and oak forests. From its inland promontory, the landscape opens towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, with wide views across the Nebrodi, the Madonie and the northern Sicilian coast.

Its identity is closely tied to ancient Halaesa Arconidea, founded in 403 BC by Archonides, tyrant of Herbita. After Halaesa disappeared at the end of the 9th century, its survivors founded Tusa nearby, giving the village a rare continuity between a Greek-Roman past and a medieval Sicilian form.

Later fortified under the Normans and developed by the Ventimiglia family, Tusa still has the compact character of an old hill settlement, with narrow streets and a strong memory of local religious and village traditions. What makes it distinctive is this layered origin: a medieval Nebrodi village carrying the legacy of a vanished ancient city, poised between wooded hills and the Tyrrhenian coast.
