Mistretta

Mistretta is an ancient hill town in the Nebrodi area of northern Sicily, set at about 1,000 metres above sea level and often described as the western gateway to the Nebrodi Park. Its high mountain position gives it a distinctive character, with woods around the town and wide views that can reach toward the Aeolian Islands.

Known as the “Sella dei Nebrodi”, Mistretta has the feel of a quiet inland borgo, far from city traffic and closely tied to local traditions, folk culture and rural heritage. Its historic centre, with narrow lanes and small squares, reflects a long continuity of settlement rather than a single period or style.

The town’s identity reaches back to confirmed Bronze Age habitation, while later Arab and Norman phases helped shape its development; Norman colonisation is recorded in 1101, and part of the old town still belongs to that medieval legacy. This combination of mountain setting, layered history and strong Nebrodi cultural memory is what makes Mistretta stand apart among Sicily’s inland towns.
