Motta d’Affermo is a small historic village in the province of Messina, set on a mountain ridge at the foot of Monte San Cono, between the fiumare of Tusa and Santo Stefano di Camastra. Facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, it belongs to a landscape of steep slopes, open horizons and mountain-sea views, with the Aeolian Islands forming part of its wider visual setting.
The area has older roots, with evidence of settlement from the late Roman imperial period, while the village’s identity took shape through the Byzantine and medieval phases. Its earlier name was Sparto, a casale later repopulated in 1380 by the knight Muccio Albamonte, also known as di Fermo, who became lord and baron of the place. From this episode came the name Motta di Muccio di Fermo, later shortened into Motta d’Affermo.
Today, the village’s character rests on this layered memory: a ridge-top borgo with medieval and feudal origins, strong local traditions and a distinctive position between the Nebrodi mountains and the Tyrrhenian coast.
