Naso

Naso is a historic hill town in the Nebrodi area of northern Sicily, set like a terrace above the sea, with views that connect the green mountain landscape to the Aeolian Islands. Its character is quiet, religious and traditional, shaped by an old centre of lanes and stairways and by a rural setting where craftsmanship and agriculture have long been part of local life.

The town’s beginnings are wrapped in uncertain ancient traditions, with names such as Naxida and Agatirsi or Agathyrnos linked to its origin stories. Its documented history becomes clearer in the Norman period: in 1094 it was donated to the monastic authority connected with Lipari and Patti, and in the High Middle Ages its importance grew under the Ventimiglia feudal lords. Later earthquakes damaged much of the older town, leaving Naso with a strong memory of rebuilding.

Today, Naso is distinctive for the way its mountain-and-sea setting frames a deeply rooted religious identity, especially as the birthplace of San Cono, and a cultural memory tied to medieval power, rural traditions and local craftsmanship.
