San Salvatore di Fitalia is a small borgo in the Province of Messina, set in the Nebrodi Mountains between the fiumare of Fitalia and Tortorici. Its position on a route linking the coast with the inland areas gave the village a strategic character, while its mountain setting and compact scale keep its identity closely tied to local memory and religious tradition.
The settlement grew around an ancient castle, with Byzantine and Arab phases connected to this early stronghold and a clearer Norman trace in 1094, when Count Roger of Calabria and Sicily donated the castle of SS. Salvatore to monastic ownership. The borgo of SS. Salvatore developed around it in the 14th century, before later feudal and Spanish periods added to its layered background.
Today, the village is especially marked by devotion to San Calogero, whose local cult is documented from 1537. This combination of mountain geography, medieval strategic origins and enduring religious memory gives San Salvatore di Fitalia a distinct place among the smaller Nebrodi communities.
