Reitano

Reitano is a small hill village in the Province of Messina, set in the Nebrodi area at about 396 metres above sea level. It stands on a slope beside the Santo Stefano fiumara, in a coastal hilly landscape where the settlement’s rural scale and quiet character remain central to its identity.

Known in older forms as Regitano, the village has an uncertain name origin: one tradition connects it with the Arabic word *Rahal*, while another links it to the Calabrian “Reggitano”. Its history is closely tied to Mistretta, of which it was once a hamlet, remaining connected to it until 1638/1639 before passing through feudal ownership, including the Colonna family.

Reitano’s character is rooted in the world of farmers, shepherds, labourers and artisans, with past local crafts such as wrought iron work and weaving forming part of its cultural memory. What makes the village distinctive is this combination of Nebrodi hillside setting, long dependence on Mistretta and a small rural identity that still defines its sense of place.
