Villafranca Sicula is a small agricultural hill town in the province of Agrigento, set among cultivated countryside of almond, olive, vine, orange and peach groves. Its landscape belongs to a coastal hilly area near the narrow valley where the Sosio becomes the Verdura, giving the town a rural character closely tied to farming and local community life.
Its identity reaches back to territory associated in the sources with ancient Triocala and the Sicani, before the later settlement of Villafranca was founded on 27 September 1499 by Antonio Alliata. The name recalls a fiscal privilege of exemption, while “Sicula” was officially added in 1863 to distinguish it from other places called Villafranca.
Long connected with the Alliata family, the town retains the feel of a quiet, traditional Sicilian village shaped by agricultural and devotional customs rather than urban bustle. What makes Villafranca Sicula distinctive is this meeting of ancient memory, late-medieval foundation and a still strongly rural setting in inland Agrigento.
