Campofranco is a small hill town in the Province of Caltanissetta, set in the rural interior of Sicily at around 350–385 metres above sea level. Its setting is fertile and hilly, and its character remains closely tied to the agricultural world that shaped its earliest community of farmers and artisans.
The town’s name derives from Giovanni del Campo, and its origins lie in a 16th-century feudal foundation granted under royal licence. Campofranco later passed into the orbit of the Lucchesi Palli family, who raised it to the status of a principality, before it gained autonomy in 1812 and became connected to the district of Caltanissetta.
Today, Campofranco reads as a traditional rural borgo rather than a showpiece town: modest, local in scale, and marked by the memory of farming, craft work and later mining development after Italian Unification. Its distinctiveness lies in this layered identity — a named feudal foundation that grew into an agricultural community in the hills of central Sicily.
